Issue #7 · May 2026
THIS WEEK'S DEEP DIVE
Google built an AI that works while you sleep — and cut the price to make it real.
Gemini Spark is Google's 24/7 personal AI agent, announced at I/O 2026. It runs on Google Cloud even when your devices are off. And the biggest surprise wasn't the product — it was that Google slashed the price from $249.99 to $99.99/month (India: ₹6,500/month) the same day it launched.
⚡ PRICE UPDATE — IMPORTANT FOR INDIA
Google AI Ultra dropped from $249.99 → $99.99/month at I/O. India pricing: ₹6,500/month (lower tier) and ₹19,500/month (premium). Spark is included in both Ultra plans — but currently US/English only at launch. India rollout expected but no confirmed date yet.
01 — WHAT IS IT
Not a chatbot. An agent that acts.
For three years, "AI in Google products" meant a sidebar that suggested things. Spark changes that. It runs on its own dedicated virtual machine in Google Cloud, powered by Gemini 3.5 and Google's Antigravity harness — the scaffolding that lets the model use tools, browse the web, write to files, and chain actions across apps.
A chatbot stops when it answers. Spark continues working. It doesn't just write the email — it sends it. It doesn't just suggest the meeting — it books it. Sundar Pichai at the I/O keynote: "It runs on dedicated virtual machines on Google Cloud. You don't need to keep your laptop open."
Quick take: Google moved from suggestion mode to action mode. Same interface. Structurally different system underneath. 900 million Gemini users. No new app required.
02 — HOW IT WORKS
Three building blocks: Tasks, Skills, Schedules.
|
TASKS One prompt spanning five apps simultaneously. "Pull action items, build a Sheets tracker, draft the kickoff email, book follow-ups." |
SKILLS Reusable behaviors you teach in plain language. Remembered permanently. No code, no fine-tuning. |
SCHEDULES Time or condition triggers. Fires Tasks automatically — you wake up to a finished briefing. |
Composition is where it gets powerful: Schedule → calls Task → uses Skill. Every Monday 9AM, Spark scans your inbox using your Skim Skill and builds your week plan. Demonstrated live on stage at I/O by Google Labs VP Josh Woodward.
03 — REAL WORKFLOWS CONFIRMED AT I/O
What it actually does on day one.
📝 Ghostwriter Skill
Read your last 50 sent emails → extract writing style → apply to every future draft automatically. Demonstrated live on stage. Josh Woodward ran this exact demo at I/O.
📋 Multi-App Chains
Second I/O demo: Spark compiled RSVPs from a block party email thread → built a document listing who's bringing what → auto-updates when new emails arrive. One prompt, zero follow-up.
💳 Finance Monitoring
Auto-scan credit card statements when they arrive → flag hidden subscriptions or new charges. Confirmed by Engadget and Google's own blog.
📬 Inbox Management
Draft replies in your style, sort by priority, monitor school inboxes, surface pending invoices. Small businesses: "Never miss a question from a customer" — confirmed Woodward quote from TechCrunch.
🛒 Third-Party Actions (via MCP)
Book a restaurant via OpenTable. Place a grocery order via Instacart. Create a Canva design. These are live on day one — Spark takes the action, not just drafts the message.
04 — INTEGRATIONS
9 native Google apps + 30+ MCP partners at launch.
All connections off by default. You enable each one in settings. Spark only reads from apps you've explicitly turned on.
| Category | Apps | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace | Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube, Maps, Keep | Day one |
| Named MCP Partners | Canva, OpenTable, Instacart | Day one |
| Coming summer 2026 | Adobe, Samsung, Spotify, CapCut + 30+ more total | Announced |
| Android Halo | Live status bar showing what Spark is doing in real time | Preview |
MCP note: Spark uses the same open protocol as Claude Desktop and Cursor. Every app that ships an MCP server works with every agent that speaks MCP. Google confirmed 30+ partners at or near launch — the three named above are the confirmed day-one integrations from official sources.
05 — PRICING (VERIFIED)
Google cut Ultra by 60% to make Spark viable.
The day before I/O, AI Ultra cost $249.99/month. On stage, Google announced a new $99.99/month entry tier — and dropped the old $249.99 plan to $200 (renaming it AI Ultra Premium). The math is deliberate: Spark needed a mass-market price point.
| Plan | US Price | India Price | Spark? |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Plus | $7.99/mo | — | ❌ No |
| AI Pro | $19.99/mo | — | ❌ No |
| AI Ultra ⭐ | $99.99/mo | ₹6,500/mo | ✅ Yes (US only at launch) |
| AI Ultra Premium | $200/mo | ₹19,500/mo | ✅ Yes (US only at launch) |

06 — SAFETY
It asks before spending money or sending external email.
Every connection is opt-in. High-stakes actions — spending money, external emails — require manual approval. The default state is: do nothing. Confirmed by Engadget, Google's own blog, and Sundar Pichai's keynote remarks.
One caveat worth noting: an APK leak before I/O included a privacy line saying Spark "may share your info or make purchases without asking." Google softened this language at the keynote — but the permission model will matter more once Spark scales beyond trusted testers. Watch this space.
07 — ACCESS
US first. India: wait, but subscribe to Ultra anyway.
Spark is rolling out to trusted testers this week. Public beta opens next week for US Google AI Ultra subscribers ($99.99/month). India is not in the first wave — but Google AI Ultra is now available in India at ₹6,500/month, and Spark India rollout is expected. No confirmed date.
- Go to gemini.google.com → upgrade to Google AI Ultra
- US users: look for the Spark banner when beta opens
- Download macOS desktop app → gemini.google/mac
- Enable Gmail, Calendar, Drive first — highest leverage
- Build your Ghostwriter Skill on day one: "Read my last 50 sent emails and extract my writing style into a permanent Ghostwriter Skill"
Pro tip: Even if you're in India and Spark isn't live for you yet — design the Skills you'd want now. Write out what your Ghostwriter Skill should know about your writing voice. When India access opens, you'll train it in 5 minutes, not 5 hours.
SUMMER 2026 ROADMAP
What's confirmed coming next.
- Email and text Spark directly — no app needed
- Custom sub-agents for specialized tasks
- Control your local browser (not just cloud VM)
- Voice on macOS — speak naturally, Spark reformats into precise drafts
- Spark on Gemini macOS app — local file access + desktop automation
- Adobe, Samsung, Spotify, CapCut MCP integrations
- Android Halo — live status bar showing what Spark is doing in real time
SHEKHAR'S TAKE
The price cut is the real story.
At $249.99/month, Spark was a niche product for power users. At $99.99 — and ₹6,500 in India — it's a mainstream bet. That's cheaper than Claude Max ($100) and ChatGPT Pro ($200). Google is deliberately underpricing to win the agentic AI race before the category sets.
For Indian professionals: ₹6,500/month is still a significant subscription. But compare it to what you'd pay a part-time VA for inbox management and basic admin. The use cases Google demoed on stage — invoice generation, inbox triage, multi-app workflow chains — are real productivity gains, not demo theatre.
The question to answer honestly before paying: does your work actually involve enough Gmail/Docs/Sheets volume that a 24/7 agent moves the needle? If yes, ₹6,500/month ROI is easy to calculate. If you're mostly on WhatsApp and phone calls, Spark's day-one Workspace-first integration isn't where your leverage is yet.
